What If It Rains on My Wedding Day?

An honest, hopeful answer from a photographer who has shot in every kind of sky imaginable.

“I’ve checked the forecast every single morning for the past three months. If it rains, I don’t know what I’ll do.”

I hear this from brides more than almost anything else. More than seating chart anxiety, more than flower worries, more than dress alterations. The weather is the one thing that sits completely outside your control — and for someone who has spent months perfecting every other detail, that can feel terrifying.

So let me speak to you plainly, as your photographer, as someone who has stood in drizzle and downpours and unexpected afternoon storms at more weddings than I can count.

Rain on your wedding day is not a disaster. In fact, some of the most extraordinary photographs I have ever taken were on days when the sky decided to have its own opinions.

Let’s talk about this honestly

First, the Fear is Completely Valid

Let’s not pretend otherwise. You’ve imagined your wedding day a thousand times — golden light, open gardens, a sky that looks like it was painted specifically for you. Rain feels like a rewrite of the story you’ve been telling yourself for months, maybe years.

You’re allowed to grieve that version for a moment. Really. Anyone who tells you to “just go with it” without acknowledging what you’re letting go of isn’t being entirely fair to you.

But here’s what I want you to hold alongside that feeling: the photographs that make people cry when they look back at them are rarely the perfectly-lit ones taken in ideal conditions. They are the ones that captured something real. And rain? Rain is about as real as it gets.

I have never — not once — had a couple look back at their rainy wedding photographs and wish the weather had been different. Without exception, they have said it made their day feel more intimate, more theirs, more unforgettable.

As with all things in life… ATTITUDE makes all of the difference. And I have worked with brides that saved the day because their attitude and resolution to make every minute count with a smile on their face was a force that saved the day.

The Secret: Rain is Extraordinary for Photography

I want to let you in on something that photographers know but rarely say out loud — overcast and rainy days are, from a purely technical standpoint, often better for photography than bright sunshine.

Here’s why. Harsh midday sun creates deep, unflattering shadows across faces. It makes people squint. It blows out highlights and flattens depth. An overcast sky, on the other hand, acts like a giant natural softbox — it diffuses light evenly, wraps around faces beautifully, and renders skin tones with a softness that no amount of editing can replicate in harsh conditions.

Rain adds drama. It adds reflection. Puddles become mirrors. A wet cobblestone street turns into something almost cinematic. Umbrellas become props with personality. The world slows down slightly, people huddle closer together, and something tender and unguarded happens between the people in front of my lens. How to Prepare So Rain Never Catches You Off Guard

A good wedding photographer doesn’t just hope for the best — they plan for every version of the day. Here’s what that preparation looks like, and what you should be asking your photographer about before you book:

  • Scout indoor backup locations in advance.Your venue likely has beautiful interior spaces that rarely get used for portraits — a grand entrance hall, a candlelit cellar, a covered terrace with fairy lights. Ask your photographer before the wedding: “If it rains, where will we go?” They should have an answer ready. AND THAT’S WHY WE DO A WALK THROUGH PRIOR AND HAVE FINAL RUN THROUGH “PLAN B” DISCUSSIONS!
  • Invest in beautiful umbrellas. This sounds almost too simple, but it works. Clear acrylic umbrellas are a photographer’s best friend — they protect you from rain while still letting light through beautifully. A matching set for the bridal party costs very little and adds enormous charm to photographs. FUN FACT- I actually carry them in the back of my vehicle and used them for a wedding that I did this last weekend! Really!!! I bought them ( okay… that’s a lie… my husband bought them) for my own wedding and have 100 available at all times
  • Embrace the covered ceremony option. If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, work with your venue to identify a covered alternative. Having that plan in place means you’re not scrambling if the forecast changes — and it means your photographer already knows the light in that space.
  • Keep the couple portrait window flexible.Rain is rarely constant all day. A good photographer will watch the sky and, the moment a break comes, take you outside for fifteen minutes of golden, post-rain light. Some of the most magical portraits I’ve ever taken were taken in the twenty minutes after a downpour — the air is cleaner, the colours more saturated, everything glows. Another smart way to build in portrait flexibility is to consider a first look before the ceremony — it creates a protected window for portraits early in the day, entirely independent of the afternoon weather.
  • Dress for it, even slightly.Discuss with your stylist about weather options early. A chic trench coat worn over your dress, beautiful boots, a wrap or shawl — these aren’t concessions to bad weather, they become part of your aesthetic. They become the photographs people talk about.
  • Ask your photographer about rain coverage in their contract.A professional, experienced wedding photographer will have a clear plan for inclement weather and will discuss it with you as part of your pre-wedding consultation. If they don’t bring it up — ask. How they respond will tell you a great deal about how prepared they really are. We hate to get our cameras wet so a professional photographer will always be prepared.

A note on the forecastWeather forecasts beyond 48 hours are notoriously unreliable. A rain prediction three weeks out is, statistically speaking, barely more accurate than a coin toss. Please — for your own peace of mind — stop checking until two days before. It makes us all go MENTAL. But I understand it’s hard not to. The last wedding it was changing minute by minute and it ended up being better than forecasted.

BUT…. What really makes the difference?

The Thing That Matters More Than Weather

I have photographed weddings in blazing heat that felt emotionally cold, and I have photographed weddings in November drizzle that felt like the warmest day of anyone’s life. The weather is set dressing. It is not the story. (For more on how to stay calm and present on the day itself — whatever the sky is doing — read Five Ways Brides Can Feel at Ease on Their Wedding Day.)

The story is you, reaching for your partner’s hand when the first drop falls. It’s your guests holding their programmes over their heads and laughing. It’s the way your new husband looks at you when you both realise it doesn’t matter at all — that nothing about this day is going the way either of you planned, and somehow it is exactly right.

Those are the photographs I live and love to take. And they almost never happen on days when everything goes perfectly to plan.

What you need on a rainy wedding day is not a miracle of meteorology. What you need is a photographer who is calm, prepared, creative under pressure, and genuinely excited by the unexpected. Someone who sees rain not as a problem to apologise for, but as an ingredient to work with.

Someone who, when the sky opens up at 3pm, doesn’t panic — but quietly starts looking for the light.

The day will not go the way you imagined.
It will go the way it goes.
And in twenty years, when you pull out your photographs,
you will be so glad it did.

At the end of the day, your wedding isn’t something to perfect — it’s something to experience. When you release the need to recreate what you’ve seen and instead stay present in what’s unfolding, the day becomes lighter, more meaningful, and deeply personal. That’s where the most timeless images live — not in perfection, but in presence.

If you’re drawn to editorial imagery but want a day that feels relaxed, meaningful, and uniquely yours, I’d love to guide you through that process.
