How to Create Photo & Video Content for a Vacation Rental

May 29, 2020

This story is a perfect example of how simple and helpful conversation can lead to a rabbit hole of opportunities. Fusion Photography and me (Lisa Staff Photography) were connected with Connie and Charles, owners of a gorgeous Hilton Head airBnB/vacation rental, via another connection made with a different community member/client.

Let’s start off by throwing this content enthusiast tip at you: If you’re going to own an airBnb or really any vacation rental, having great photo and video content of your property and the surroundings are key, especially if you live in a touristy area where airBnbs, hotels, etc are plentiful. Your listing needs to stand out and show the true essence of what your property brings to the table!

Cultivate a Relationship

Connie and Charles understood the need for intriguing photographs of their space, but during our first conversation they only wanted a few. At first we were on board with this, then…the conversation got deeper and more engaging. Without even trying to sell (remember: never sell), we were able to get to the core of their needs and wants. Deevo and I quickly realized their property needed and deserved more: photos, video, the whole nine. After hours of brainstorming, we left them with our ideas to mull over.

Two weeks later and boom – we get a call from Connie and Charles that they’d like to meet to explain their vision. Shockingly, their ideas for the online/digital marketing of their airBnB had expanded from our initial conversations. Needless to say, they commissioned Lisa Staff Photography and Fusion Photography to create photography content and video marketing in the form of a video anthem for their beautiful property. Not only that though – they also had us consult them throughout the creative process.. think business consulting, but with a content driven, creative edge.

Create Digital Marketing Assets

After that last conversation, we were full steam ahead! There was months (literally) of creative planning, scripting, storyboarding, photography shoots, and many other things tied into digital marketing. The end result of all of this is high-quality photos and video marketing in the form of a video anthem (which you’ll see at the end of this post) that they use for their airBnB listing. I’m not trying to toot my own horn, but the video anthem goes above and beyond just the property. We used a drone to also capture the surrounding areas so viewers get a look at THE STORY – the vacation home they are renting and what comes along with that vacation home as far as the surroundings go.

I’m going to keep this one short and let the photo and video marketing speak for itself, but bottom line is: this collaboration grew into what it was because Fusion Photography and I were selfless with our time and really took the energy to engage with these business owners – yes running an airBnb is a business. Those hours we spent just having conversation with them was well worth it. It showed we cared because we LISTENED, gave them our attention, then took all of that information to the creative process and created something we are proud of. And I have to say, they’re pretty darn happy with it too. As photographers and digital marketers, we are here to serve our clients and that’s what this project of photo and video marketing was all about.

So, if I had to answer “how to create photo and video content for a vacation rental“, I’d say by focusing on cultivating relationships first then let the creative process take off as it does.
